My Mischief

My Mischief
As I mentioned in an earlier blog, I lost my dog the other morning. She had developed a massive tumor on her liver and spleen and by the time it was discovered it was too late to do anything about it. Mercifully, she did not suffer very much and passed away quietly in my arms.

I had gotten her as a 6 month old puppy for my mother to be a companion for her but Mom passed on only a few weeks after we got her. She then became my best friend and was my constant companion for over 8 years. I have never known a dog that was so smart or had such a distinct personality.

It took 2 years to get her house broken –only because she chose not to. Then, one morning, for no apparent reason she went to the door and asked to go out. We never had another accident in the house. Even one time when I went to the hospital for what was supposed to be an out patient procedure and they kept me for 2 days. When I got home she ran for the door because she had held it all that time rather than have an accident in the house.

As a pup
I have so many great memories of her. When she was just a pup I took her and Mom up to a local coffee shop. Another couple arrived with a very large and very aggressive Boxer on a leash. It growled rather savagely at Mischief, who the ran to just out of leash range and barked defiantly at it, then immediately retreated under my chair, only to stick her head out from between my legs and bark again. When the couple disappeared with their dog, Mischief ran out a few steps and gave them a parting bark, turned and strutted triumphantly back to me, her tail wagging vigorously.

My mother gave her the name Mischief because when we first brought her home she immediately took over everything. She was playful, happy and very, very stubborn. Mom called her 'Miss Chief' and that quickly became 'Mischief'.

A pet like that is one in a million. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to have known one should thank the heavens for the privilege. They become a part of your very personality, changing you for the better. To say she will be missed would be an extreme understatement. A part of my very sole has been ripped from me. Time will hide the wound, but it will never mend it.

Mischief playing with my Best Friend
I heard a man say once that friends like that give you memories and those memories mold you and change you for the better. If that is true, I am a much better person today for having known my little Mischief.

Thank you very much. It has been surprisingly hard. There is not an hour that goes by that something does not remind me of hr. I miss her dearly.
