Are They Kidding?

There have been a few headlines in the news recently that had  me asking: "Are they kidding?"

One of those headlines involved Mayor Bloomberg of New York. You know the good Mayor. He's the man who got trans-fats banned from New York Restaurants, made it illegal to smoke in public parks or on public piers, regulates the amount of salt in meals you buy in Manhattan and is the main driving force behind making it so you can not buy a soda larger than 16 ounces. Yes, the Mayor who has the health of the citizens of New York always in the forefront of his thoughts.

Well, you can imagine my surprise to learn how this campaigner for good health spent his Fourth of July. It seems Mayor Bloomberg traveled out to Stanton Island to MC Nathans Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest! The winner of this years contest, Joey Chestnut, managed to put away 68 hot dogs and buns in just 10 minutes.

Excuse me, Mr. Mayor, is that really how you intend to combat obesity and promote good health? Really? Are you kidding?

Another story that made me ask that question was news that Iran will be taking over the head position on the United Nations Arms Trade Commission. Yes, you read that right. Iran, a country who has had more arms embargoes and sanctions placed against it since it's creation in 1979 than any other except North Korea, will be heading the United Nations Commission charged with deciding how international arms transactions are to be handled. Boy talk about putting the fox in charge of the hen house....

I'd ask if they were kidding, but, it's the United Nations. They know how to act like clowns but they don't kid.

Live Long and Prosper.....
