Items in the News that demand comment

Egypt has sent a new envoy to Israel carrying "a message of peace". Many people find that very encouraging. As a student of history, I am a little more reserved about my reaction. I guess the question I would ask is: Does the name "Saburo Kurusu" mean anything to you? -look it up...
[O.K. -I won't make you look it up. Saburo Kurusu was the Japanese Envoy that signed the Pact with Germany and Italy -then negotiated a non-aggression treaty with Russia and then came to Washington to promote peaceful relations with America. Instead of peace, he delivered the ultimatum that Japan intended as a justification for war and the attack on Pearl Harbor (but he did not deliver the ultimatum until 2 hours after the attack had begun).]

Putin made an interesting statement the other day. He said that no one had the right to tell Russia with whom it can trade or what it can sell (he was referring to criticism over Russian arms sales to Syria). He said that only a resolution passed by the UN Security Council could restrict Russia's sales. That's a pretty safe comment considering that Russia has a veto on the Security Council and can block any resolution it does not like...

One tiny piece of encouraging news out of the Middle East: I see that Tunisian journalists have staged strikes to protest attempts by the new Islamist Government to control the media. They have been experiencing a level of freedom the media in that part of the world has never really known -and they don't want to loose it. (Our President and State Department apparently haven't noticed ...)

Lance Armstrong stepped down from the Livestrong Foundation and Nike dropped their sponsorship of poor Lance. Good. I am glad. Lance Armstrong is a fraud. He has lied from the very beginning about his using drugs to gain an unfair advantage in his sports events. He had been built up as a role model and hero -but he turned out to be a cheat and a liar. I hope they find some way to prosecute him -and the people that facilitated his fraud....

Enough for today? Yeah, I guess so -but there are so many things in the news... well maybe we'll find some more to comment on later... Make it a great day (you need to work at that a little sometimes)!

Live Long and Prosper...
